Industries across the globe are turning into Artificial Intelligence (AI) to relieve organisations from bottlenecks from manpower shortage. However, its track record of mishaps underscores the need for good ol’ fashioned human labour.

As technology continues to advance, leveraging AI not only enhances productivity and quality, it also contributes to the evolution of a more intelligent and adaptive manufacturing ecosystem. There is a plethora of benefits to reap from being smart about tapping, thanks to algorithms.

Japan, known for its obsession with perfection has also adopted AI for its food industry. Osaka Ohsho’s parent firm, Eat&Holdings, simply did not have enough manpower to check every single dumpling, or keep up with demand. It subsequently turned to technology for an answer.

In January 2023, it opened a high-tech factory equipped with AI-powered cameras trained to detect any faulty gyoza on the production lines. Today this facility makes two dumplings every second. That’s twice the speed of the other Osaka Ohsho production sites.

“By implementing AI, we have reduced the manpower on the manufacturing line by almost 30%,” says spokeswoman Keiko Handa.

The firm has also recently launched an AI-powered cooking robot called I-Robo at one of its Tokyo restaurants. As it takes time to train chefs, the company says the technology will help with the labour shortage issue. While many hope AI can pick up the slack, a robot is still a robot and will have glitches.

Balancing the Gears: Navigating AI Integration

Integrating AI in metalworking is only a good idea if the concoction of human interference is right instead of programming steps soley from historical data and leaving the robot to do its thing. Though integration of AI in tapping for instance, brought about transformative changes, with AI as the common tool in today’s manufacturing world, it is imperative to be smart about it than being a lagger. Integrating AI in tapping represents a leap forward in the capabilities of metalworking machinery.

Over reliance on AI might be a recipe for disaster — there are substantial evidence to show for it. The automotive industry has been on the hot seat lately. Tesla, who swore by AI and autonomous driving has chocked up incidents to invite doubts about its quality. It is anybody’s guess if AI encouraged complacency or putting dollars above sense.

The latest being Apple, who shelved research and development effort to develop an electric and self-driving car, codenamed Project Titan. Apple never openly discussed any of its automotive research, but around 5,000 employees were reported to be working on the project as of 2018.

Boeing, who is neck-deep in crisis and eroded public’s trust is planning to adopt robotics to minimise faults during manufacturing. This came after a series of incidents which drove passengers to check on the aircraft for the flights they booked before boarding. Boeing’s colossal trust issues outweighed the corrective measures announced to address the incidents.

Seoul has self-driving buses at night and they did a splendid job spooking passengers. It was only having a driver at the wheel assured passengers it was safe to board.

BBC quoted Graham Currie, a professor of public transport at Monash University in Melbourne: “The view that autonomous cars are our future is sheer science fiction. It’s nonsense, quite frankly. On the street we have dogs, we have children, we have weather, we have other vehicles. Technology hasn’t sorted all of that out yet and it may never do.”

According to Professor Currie, governments are especially interested in the possibilities of autonomous public transport because the majority of the cost of a bus route is the driver’s salary. Naturally, this has led to some concern among bus drivers. The trade union representing Seoul’s 18,000 bus drivers told the BBC that the city government has never contacted them about its plans for an autonomous future.

“Self-driving should not replace human labour completely,” says Yoo Jae-ho, Secretary-General of the Seoul City Bus Union. “Right now, I don’t think that’s even possible – it’s too dangerous.”

It might not be long before we see bullet trains losing their market share to eVTOL or flying taxis for city-hopping travellers, apart from commercial airlines, private jets and helicopters.

The metalworking world can look forward to a huge wave of demand for almost every sector ever since the concept of floating cars made appearances in CES 2024. XPeng AeroHT, a Chinese company at the forefront of eVTOL technology, used CES 2024 to debut their upcoming “Land Aircraft Carrier.”

Scheduled for mass production in 2025, the Land Aircraft Carrier consists of two parts: a ground module and an air module. The ground module is a battery-electric vehicle for up to five passengers. This module has an extended-range electric powertrain and a three-axle, six-wheel configuration for enhanced all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.

For real city hoppers, AutoFlight’s five-seater Prosperity eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft completed a significant milestone by autonomously flying the 50km (31 miles) route from Shenzhen to Zhuhai. The flight from Shenzhen to Zhuhai across the Pearl River Delta took just 20 minutes, a journey that would require three hours by car.

This is the world’s first public flight of an eVTOL aircraft on a cross-sea and inter-city route, spanning across the bay where the Pearl River meets the sea, connecting the two southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. This flight marks a significant milestone in the development and road to certification of this exciting new form of mobility.

Supernal, part of Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Air Mobility division, also used CES to showcase its latest eVTOL innovations. Specifically, the company debuted its S-A2 product concept, the follow-up to its S-A1, which was introduced at CES 2020. The S-A2 is a V-tail aircraft designed to cruise 120 miles per hour at 1,500 feet, catering to typical city operational needs for 25- to 40-mile trips. It features a distributed electric propulsion architecture with eight all-tilting rotors, ensuring vertical lift and horizontal cruise efficiency.

This time, Suzuki was not about to let its fellow carmakers have all the fun. Forming joint venture, SkyDrive Inc, it developed its own SkyDrive SD-05 vehicle, which SkyDrive refers to as a flying car, is being built by Sky Works, the SkyDrive manufacturing division, in partnership with Suzuki. SkyDrive plans to operate its electric aerial vehicle (EAV) at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan.

“Partnering with Suzuki, a renowned automotive manufacturer, is a momentous occasion for SkyDrive,” said Tomohiro Fukuzawa, CEO of SkyDrive. “It is the beginning of a new phase.  We share a goal of quality, innovation and customer satisfaction, making them an ideal partner in our quest to revolutionize urban air mobility.” The Suzuki manufacturing plant has the capability to produce 100 of the three-seater EAVs per year.

With the emergence of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, city-hopping travelers may soon opt for flying taxis over traditional bullet trains. Companies like XPeng AeroHT, AutoFlight, and Supernal are pioneering the development of eVTOL technology, showcasing the potential for efficient and convenient air mobility solutions.

Additionally, collaborations between automotive giants like Suzuki and SkyDrive highlight the growing interest in aerial vehicles, further accelerating the evolution of urban air mobility. As the metalworking industry gears up to meet the demand for these groundbreaking innovations, we are on the brink of a transformative era in transportation, where the skies above our cities become the new highways of tomorrow.

This was discussed between the Russian Trade Mission in the Philippines with representatives of the Federation of Metalworkers of the country and companies that buy rolled metal products. This is announced in the account of the Russian representation in the Philippine Islands, as reported by TASS.

Source: TV BRICS

“The Russian Trade Representation in the Philippines together with the Embassy took part in the opening ceremony of the main industry exhibition in the field of metalworking Philippine Die & Mould Machines and Equipment Exhibition. Within the framework of the event, negotiations were held with the leadership of the Federation of Metalworkers of the Philippines, as well as local companies – importers of metal products,” said representatives of the department.

Nowadays metals are the main component of the Russian-Philippine trade turnover, the Filipinos show great interest in strengthening and expanding cooperation. The Philippines imports almost US5.5 billion worth of metal products every year, and the demand for imports is only growing. The main suppliers have traditionally been neighbouring countries, including China.

The Philippine authorities understand the impact on the country’s industry of not having its own steel production, including hot-rolled coil, hot-rolled plate, and cold-rolled coil. This is why Manila is looking to expand cooperation with Moscow in this area.

The Philippine Chamber of Mines, in particular, is open to contacts with Russian representatives of the metalworking industry, for example, in the processing of nickel ore.

AYALA Corporation inked the deal as the new official distributor of BYD vehicles in the Philippines as reported by Manila Times. EV owners can expect more BYD charging stations in both public (malls) and private (condominiums, residential developments) properties that are owned and managed by Ayala Corp. and its subsidiaries.

BYD is a world leader in hybrid and pure electric vehicles, with 30 established industrial parks across six continents. The distribution agreement papers were inked and subsequently disclosed to the Securities and Exchange Commission on 11 August 2023.

Representing the Ayala Group to announce the new venture were AC Motor’s new president, Jaime Alfonso Zobel, and AC Motors Automotive Group’s former president and now Head for Distribution and Retail, Antonio “Toti” Zara. Representing BYD were Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division and president of BYD Japan, and James Ng, the Managing Director of BYD Philippines and Singapore.

The acquisition of BYD is in line with Ayala Corporation’s goal of accelerating the future of mobility in the country. With the group’s stake in renewable power generation, automotive distribution and dealerships, property development and management, manufacturing, financing and insurance, and digital connectivity — the young Zobel believes that the Ayala portfolio is in a unique position to provide long-term value to customers by providing not just vehicles but complete ecosystems to make the use of new energy vehicles more viable.

As confirmed by Zobel, Zara will lead BYD Philippines, serving as President and Chief Executive Officer, and will be in charge of building the BYD brand and furthering the Ayala new energy ecosystem. Zara confirmed that aside from continuing to offer BYD’s existing nameplates, the Han (sedan), Tang (SUV), and Dolphin (subcompact hatch), their group will be introducing the ATTO 3 compact SUV toward the end of the year.

The ATTO 3 is a highly awarded EV model that is recognised globally for its outstanding design, comfort, quality, practicality and performance. It will be the most affordable vehicle among the company’s fully electric offerings. According to Zara, with BYD, they will be able to offer fully electric vehicles at prices more Filipinos can afford.

BYD currently has two dealerships in Metro Manila. The new company plans to expand to around 12 fully operational facilities by the end of 12 months and eventually grow this number to 40 outlets around the country.

On the infrastructure side, the group will continue to add more charging stations in both public (malls) and private (condominiums, residential developments) properties that are owned and managed by Ayala Corp. and its subsidiaries.

With this plan in place, Philippines metalworking players can look forward to a hike in charging stations which entail a heightened demand for manufacturing tools for fabricating charging station’s housing and enclosure with appropriate materials (e.g., metal, plastic) through processes like injection molding, sheet metal forming, or casting.

Others include assembling the charging stations by integrating components such as the charging interface, cable management, safety systems, electronics, user interface, softwares to control the charging station’s operations, even maintenance and updates.

Edward Tsai, Sales Manager for Overseas Market from Giuliani IEMCA Machinery Company remains optimistic about the market’s recovery post Covid. IEMCA aims to constantly increase customers’ productivity by designing high-performance bar feeders, able to support any type of lathe or turning machine in the best possible way.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the way businesses operate worldwide, including the semiconductor and automotive industries. Meeting clients face-to-face has always been a crucial part in business relationships, and it has become even more important during these trying times.

In-person meetings provide a valuable opportunity to receive real-time information, which can help many remain informed about the latest market trends, consumer needs, and industry challenges. This principle holds true for Edward from Giuliani IEMCA Machinery Company.

“The pandemic forced companies to rely on online sources and word-of-mouth accounts, it has been challenging to keep up with the rapid changes and stay connected with clients. We were reliant on phones and emails to remain in touch but it does not measure up with face-to-face interactions,” he stressed.

Challenging COVID Times

The semiconductor and automotive industries had been hit hard by the pandemic, and took a significant toll on the industry’s growth and profitability. In particular, high material and shipping costs have been the biggest hurdles for businesses, making it difficult for them to maintain their bottom lines.

Edward recalled while the market showed some signs of improvement during H1 2022, customers remained hesitant due to the exorbitant freight costs. For businesses, it was a tough balance to strike when clients suffered declining revenue, and it made no financial sense to invest. When businesses picked up, it was a dilemma for clients as no business would want to dent their margins after a revenue drought.

Despite the challenging circumstances, there was a ray of hope for the semiconductor and automotive industry. Edward expects the market to pick up by H2 2023; when the gap that has existed for two years narrows.

It is an optimistic outlook for businesses, and it highlights the importance of staying connected with clients while keeping up with the latest industry trends. This is where face-to-face meetings can be invaluable for businesses. In-person meetings allow businesses to forge strong relationships with clients, gain valuable insights, and build trust and loyalty.

IEMCA aims to constantly increase the productivity of its customers by designing high-performance bar feeders, able to support any type
of lathe or turning machine in the best possible way. One of their star equipment is the MAESTRO 80 NO LIMITS, an automatic bar feeder for bars from 10 – 80mm for lathes with fixed headstock, ideal for those looking for very high performances and flexibility.

It is the best synthesis of: maximising productivity, extreme flexibility, physical and cognitive ergonomics – all within a new look with modern design lines. It helps eliminating retooling time, reduce bar change leadtime to 30 seconds, and reach the maximum speed allowed
with every configuration.
