Anders Micski, Manager of Grades and Technology for Business Unit solid round tools (SRT) at Sandvik Coromant, explains how an advanced tool coating can support more sustainable machining.

Research by Schneider Electric and Omdia found 49% of manufacturing companies expect improved performance and cost savings when investing in sustainability. While the conversation around manufacturing sustainability usually focuses on Industry 4.0 solutions, companies must not overlook the significant role that machine tools like coated solid carbide end mills play.

Machine shops now realise that a proper sustainability strategy differentiates success and failure — especially in light of today’s continuing supply chain challenges, and shortages both of materials, knowledge and skills. However, roadblocks stand in the way of manufacturing becoming more sustainable.

Almost a third of manufacturing leaders surveyed by Schneider Electric and Omdia said their organisations legacy assets and infrastructure are an obstacle to becoming greener. 27% identified cost or budget is a key roadblock, and 19% cited culture change as a challenge, or the risk of changing their existing processes.

Manufacturers should consider the significant advantages of better machine tools on production sustainability. Longer tool life can certainly support sustainable machining and ties into a number of other advantages, including reducing the number of tools required in a production run and reducing the need for costly tool replacements.

Another advantage of longer-lasting tools is the ability to produce more versatile products for two reasons. First, a tool with a longer lifespan can be used for a greater number of production cycles before it needs to be replaced or serviced. Second, with longer tool life, the tool maintains its precision and performance over an extended period, which results in improved quality and consistency of the products being produced.

Automation through machine is widespread in manufacturing in the metalworking world and consistently evolving with technologies such as Industry 4.0, Data Analytics and Predictive Maintenance. Nonetheless, machine shop operator should not jump into panic mode assuming the latter developments will take their place.

“Automation” is intimidating, more so when paired with “machine”. A piece by David Adkin from The Dartmouth noted firstly, the very existence of automation implies the loss of jobs. Automation is a way for companies to make jobs cheaper and more efficient through the use of technology.

Machines, big or small, are used in lieu of human labour. Companies may prefer to pay for one machine that can produce the same amount of goods to paying numerous human workers.

While this is a financially sound decision for companies, workers face unemployment. As economist and John French economics professor at Dartmouth Douglas Irwin pointed out in Foreign Affairs, automation has created a reality where many blue-collar jobs have become “obsolete”.

Chronicle Of Automation

Some sources noted our version of automation dates back to early 20th century. That was when Henry Ford introduced assembly line for mass production. This move propelled manufacturing efficiency and productivity.

Programmable controllers entered the ring in the middle of the 20th century, plus the development of electronic and computer technology. Combining manufacturing machinery with computer programmes did wonders for lines with repetitive and complex tasks.

Robots gained prominence subsequently in manufacturing and began performing tasks like welding, painting and assembling, notably with precision. Today, the world is buzzing with technology jargons such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and IoT (Internet of Things). Their exponential growth somehow exerted more pressure towards service, quality and efficiency.

Manufacturing players started to get acquainted with terms like “virtual reality”, “augmented reality” and even “preventative maintenance”. The common denominator among these are immediate data.

Even waiting for status report does not accommodate waiting times. Decisions need to be made within seconds to keep production running as downtime is equivalent to losses.

In a cutthroat manufacturing landscape, another business is always ready to take over your client’s account just because they have the bandwidth to produce the goods quicker and ideally at a lower rate. In other scenarios, having to wait for parts replacement just by operating in dated ways is also a deal breaker.

Profitability need not be compromised over accelerated product development cycles to adapt to rapidly changing business landscape. Staffan Lundström, Product Manager and Application Specialist from Sandvik Coromant explains how innovative Y-axis turning can overcome delays and support efficient production.

The demands on manufacturers can be summed up as: ‘produce innovative and higher quality product s in shorter time.’ Add sustainability initiatives into the mix, and it becomes clear that manufacturers in all sectors must apply comprehensive strategies to overcome these obstacles while staying ahead of the competition.

“We should not prioritise on the basis of project profitability,” wrote the best-selling product development author Donald G. Reinertsen, “but rather on how this profitability is affected by delay.”

Manufacturers are expected to accelerate product development cycles to meet rapidly-changing market demands — yet they are also losing hundreds of production hours to equipment downtime and unnecessary tool changes.

Understanding Comprehensive Strategy

What does a ‘comprehensive strategy’ entail on the machine shop floor? Antidotes to rising energy and commodity prices, suggested in PwC’s “Achieving Excellence In Production And Supply Report”, noted companies should monitor and optimise their processes to make them as efficient as possible.

This also means manufacturers should accelerate their product development cycles to meet rapidly heightening performance and safety
standards. One approach is through on demand manufacturing, where goods are delivered precisely in accordance customers’ specifications in certain quantities.

On-demand manufacturing is made possible by latest additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, like 3D printing, which speeds up
manufacturing and prototyping. Elsewhere, manufacturers use artificial intelligence (AI) and Industry 4.0 concepts to optimise their processes.

Vietnam is the country where according to AHK World Business Outlook for Spring 2023, 91% of German companies intend to continue to either invest in or expand their production, and approximately 40% of them planning to increase their workforce over the next 12 months.

Source: Vietnam Investment Review

Thanks to the government’s plans and the presence of stable macroeconomic conditions, Vietnam has maintained positive economic growth. As a result, German companies operating in Vietnam are more optimistic than they were in the Autumn of 2022, even though their short-term expectations remain cautions due to the current global challenges.

88% of the surveyed participants are confident in their business situation in Vietnam, nearly half of those from Germany expect economic growth to remain consistent, and 21% of them believe it will improve further. Despite German enterprises showing resilience and having high expectations for the Vietnamese market, they still identified several risks to their business development caused by global economic fluctuations.

These include low global demand (51%), concerns about the economic policy framework (46%), a shortage of skilled personnel (34%), and potential disruptions in the supply chain (28%). Added to this are long-term geopolitical challenges, which companies see particularly as inflation and monetary policy (41%), fragmentation of the global economy (41%), and increasing political influence on the supply chain (40%).

Despite the challenges, Vietnam is expected to experience a resurgence in its economic growth in the medium term. This will be fuelled by various factors, including free trade agreements, most notably the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the implementation of the China+1 strategy, the global trend of shifting and diversifying manufacturing supply chains towards competitive hubs in Southeast Asia, and the inflow of green investments.

57% of German companies in Vietnam prioritise diversifying their supply chains, with the nation being their top choice – followed by Malaysia and Thailand. The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam suggests the following focus areas to further strengthen the attractiveness of investment in Vietnam.

First, there should be collaborative efforts to address the potential shortage of skilled staff by equipping them with German-standard skills, capitalising on Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation. Secondly, Vietnam should prioritise strengthening its local suppliers to maintain its role in the supply chain, while also complying with sustainable development regulations and the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act.

In addition, the concretisation and implementation of the Power Development Plan VIII is recommended to incentivise renewable energy production. Finally, the country should simplify, digitalise, and streamline its administrative procedures to leverage the EVFTA and enhance its business and investment environment.

For the metalworking world, Vietnam may just be on its way to enjoy a spike in machine tool manufacturing, some of them are:

  1. CNC Machines: German companies manufacture CNC machines in Vietnam, including milling machines, lathes, and machining centers.
  2. Power Tools: Various German brands produce power tools like drills, grinders, and saws in their Vietnamese manufacturing plants.
  3. Cutting Tools: German cutting tool manufacturers have set up production facilities in Vietnam, producing tools such as drills, end mills, taps, and inserts.
  4. Welding Equipment: German welding equipment companies manufacture welding machines, torches, and accessories in Vietnam.
  5. Metrology Instruments: Precision measurement and testing equipment

In conclusion, a significant majority are optimistic about their business prospects in Vietnam, and German enterprises, in particular, show considerable confidence in the country’s economic growth. However, amidst this optimism, German companies also acknowledge the presence of various risks, primarily linked to global economic fluctuations and potential challenges in the supply chain.

Notwithstanding these concerns, Vietnam remains poised for a resurgence in economic growth, fueled by key factors such as advantageous free trade agreements like the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, the China+1 strategy implementation, and the growing trend of shifting manufacturing supply chains towards Southeast Asia’s competitive hubs. Moreover, the country is attracting green investments, further bolstering its potential for sustainable development.

As Vietnam continues to attract foreign investments and foster innovation, it is on track to maintain its position as a promising and dynamic market in the medium term. With prudent strategies, adaptive policies, and robust partnerships, German businesses, along with others investing in Vietnam, can capitalise on the nation’s evolving economic landscape and unlock new opportunities for success.

Industry 4.0 — What can other industries take away leading automotive manufacturers in this aspect? Roland Berger, strategy consultancy of European origin with a strong international presence offers its takes.

The term “Industry 4.0” was coined more than ten years ago to describe the efficiency that could be achieved by digitalising manufacturing operations. Various technological and organisation challenges made digitalising manufacturing more complex.

Despite these challenges, some industries made significant advances over the past decade – such as automotive. Roland Berger talked to leading global automotive OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers and other industry experts.

Key learnings such as clear prioritisation of digital manufacturing, setting up a dedicated cross-functional smart manufacturing team following a hub-and-spoke approach, definition of a clear IT/OT target landscape and a strong employee-focused training are lessons that enable automotive and non-automotive players accelerate their journeys to Industry 4.0.

Digitalising manufacturing, also known as “Industry 4.0”, is a key building block in the “Next Generation of Manufacturing”. It enables a higher degree of automation on the road to autonomous production. Manufacturers invested significant time and resources in building up the necessary capabilities and identifying, developing and rolling out use cases within their production plants.

Digitalised Manufacturing – Where Do We Stand Ten Years On?

More than ten years after coining “Industry 4.0”, we are still miles away from the original vision of an intelligent, fully flexible and self-organising factory. Where do we stand now? Which digital manufacturing use cases have been implemented, currently being piloted, and which are still in development phase?

Press releases and marketing literature give the impression that everybody is doing everything. This can be explained by the experimentation and fail-fast approach which are often referenced concerning digitalisation; an extension of Industry 4.0.

To analyse the current state of digital manufacturing, we narrowed our analysis and looked at the use cases seen as key value drivers which attract the lion’s share of digital manufacturing investments.

“Industry 4.0 was coined with immense hopes,” says Bernhard Langefeld, Partner at Roland Berger. “While companies have invested substantial capital, most of them are still far away from the original vision of an intelligent, fully flexible and self-organising factory. Other sectors can benefit from the automotive industry’s experience and avoid various unnecessary mistakes. By building on an overarching digitalisation strategy, structured processes and an organizational model that enables digital innovation, companies have a very good chance of leveraging the potential of Industry 4.0,” Langefeld summarises.

CEO & Co-Founder of Stuttgart-based Optimate, Jonas Steiling (JS) discusses feasibility analysis, part optimisation and the sustainable support of the digitisation process in sheet metal processing.

Founded in mid-2020 as a start-up based in Stuttgart, Optimate GmbH originated from an internal innovation program at TRUMPF. The founders have years of experience in sheet metal processing and have incorporated this expertise into a digital solution for part optimisation.

In addition to manufacturers and contract manufacturers, web stores and online marketplaces also use the cloud solution for analysing and optimising sheet metal parts. JS shares on the effectiveness of digitising sheet metal processing.

Q: What Does Optimate Has To Offer The Sheet Metal Processing Sector On The Path To Industry 4.0 And Smart Factory?

JS: In one sentence: a cloud-based solution for analysing and optimising sheet metal parts with the aim of improving design plans and reducing costs.

Q: How Would You Describe Your Approach?

JS: The designer plays a major role in determining a product’s manufacturing costs. With this in mind, we want to be involved as early as possible in the product development process and provide support during the design phase. The primary goal is always to ensure a part’s process reliability. In other words: What use is it, if the entire production process is optimised and automated regarding Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory, but the parts cannot be manufactured?

The 26th edition of the world renowned sheet metalworking show hosted in Hanover was a thriving four-day affair receiving some 38,000 global visitors. Displayed range of solutions were clearly in anticipation of the challenges ahead in 2023.

Successful Making Up For Lost Time

EuroBLECH 2022 hosted 1,300 companies from 39 countries on a net exhibition space of 86,136 sqm. A euphoric atmosphere and full order books were the results of a successful comeback of the show. It was clear that making up for lost time proved fruitful after the challenging two years.

A closer look at this year’s visitor numbers reveals that a total of 35.944 unique visitors came to the exhibition grounds in Germany. Practically matching the previous edition’s stats, this is an exceptional result, especially given the difficult general conditions. Industry experts from all parts of the world came to the show for shorter but therefore more productive visits.

“It is hard to describe how we’re feeling after giving everything we had in the past four years to make this show possible. We are overwhelmed by the fantastic outcome and proud that EuroBLECH continues its critical role in bringing the global sheet metal working industry together,” says Evelyn Warwick, Exhibition Director of EuroBLECH, on behalf of the organisers Mack-Brooks Exhibitions. “This year’s edition was both special and hugely important for the whole sheet metal working industry. Judged by the exhibition space itself, you can tell as we came pretty close to the record numbers in 2018,” continues Evelyn Warwick.

Global Visitors

A total of 62 percent of exhibitors came from outside of Germany to this year’s show. This represents a further increase in international attendance by 4 percent. Based on the preliminary results of the exhibition survey, this trend continuous throughout the visitors: more than half of the trade visitors (56 percent) made their way to the event from outside of Germany, making EuroBLECH a truly international exhibition.

Major visitor countries, next to Germany, included the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Turkey, Austria, Belgium, Denmark and France. Furthermore, 37 percent of all visitors do not attend any other trade show, which is a 10 percent hike compared to the show in 2018 and underlines the importance of the event.

As the key marketplace for the industry, EuroBLECH 2022 offered its visitors the opportunity to find solutions for the current challenges in the industry and connects them with businesses from all over the world to help them integrate the latest machinery and software into their manufacturing process. The hot topics this year were digitalisation, sustainability and Industry 4.0. Many of the products and innovations shown at EuroBLECH 2022 have been developed with a focus on cost and resource efficiency.

“The visitors this year meant serious business. Almost every second person entering the gates to EuroBLECH 2022 came with the intention to invest. That’s an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous edition”, concludes Evelyn Warwick. Both exhibitors and visitors were highly satisfied with the show and their newly established business relations.

The visitors praised the comprehensiveness and international range of the products on display, as well as the quality of the exhibition stands and the many live demonstrations of digital processes. The exhibitors appreciated the highly qualified and international audience with its high percentage of decision-makers (80 percent).

From The Ground

“EuroBLECH is of great importance to us, as it is the leading international show for the sheet metal working industry. It is a truly global event, hence we were able to meet visitors from all over the world, for example Asia and Australia. Our result of the show is a success for Bystronic in these challenging market conditions,” Johan Elster, Chief Sales Officer, Bystronic Group.

“We’ve had a fantastic week at EuroBLECH recording a record number of leads. The atmosphere was electric and it was clear to see that customers were ready and excited to be back at EuroBLECH,” Matthew Fowles, Group Marketing Director, LVD Company NV.

A great majority of the visitors came from the industry (72 percent), followed by visitors from trade workshops and services. The most important sectors visitors belonged to included engineering, steel and aluminium construction, sheet metal & products, the automotive industry and its suppliers, iron and steel production and electrical engineering.

In addition to the innovations and numerous live demonstrations at the exhibition stands, attendees were able to appreciate the EuroBLECH 2022 Presentation Area. The new show feature delivered 27 sessions throughout the four exhibition days, offering exciting insight into innovative companies and projects, interesting discussions and valuable networking opportunities. The next edition of EuroBLECH will take place from 22 – 25 October 2024 at Hanover.
