Singapore’s Largest Living Lab For New Manufacturing Technologies And Solutions
Asia’s leading Advanced Manufacturing hub with a growing ecosystem of research institutes and capabilities developers, technology and training providers, and advanced manufacturers.
Master-planned and developed by JTC, Jurong Innovation District (JID) is a 600-hectare next generation district located along Singapore’s western manufacturing belt. Opening in phases since 2019, the District expects to create 95,000 new jobs in research, innovation and advanced manufacturing.
With a ready ecosystem of advanced manufacturers, researchers, technology and training providers, frontier investments in the district including Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre (HMGICS), Shimano Singapore’s Factory of the Future, and Surbana Jurong Campus, are on track to be completed by 2022.
As the masterplanner of JID, JTC is adding 58,000 square metres of laboratory, office and collaborative spaces to the district with the extension of JTC CleanTech Two and JTC CleanTech Three.
Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre (HMGICS) is an open innovation lab that will develop future mobility technologies for global markets. Combining AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced technologies, the lab will create a smart manufacturing platform and a pilot electric vehicle production facility.
With a total land size of 44,000 square metres, the S$400 million facility is expected to complete by 2022. It aims to create about 300 skilled jobs by 2025, and will contribute to Singapore’s Green Plan by using solar energy and hydrogen to help achieve carbon neutrality.
Shimano Singapore’s Factory of the Future will house a research and development hub that testbed first-of-its-kind solutions, such as integrating wearable technology with bicycles and use of special materials on cycling apparel. The S$179 million facility will have a redesigned manufacturing floor with cell manufacturing concepts and real-time monitoring systems.
It will also upskill more than 100 engineers to operate in this new IoT-enabled environment.
Siemens Advance Manufacturing Transformation Centre (AMTC) will support the digitalisation and transformation manufacturing facilities in ASEAN. There will be state-of-the-art digital twin facility models to stimulate and evaluate operations in a real manufacturing environment.
The centre will also house its first Additive Manufacturing Experience Center outside Germany, allowing companies to experience end-to-end additive manufacturing production line with Siemens’ technology partners.
Bosch Rexroth Regional Training Centre will offer a standardised training programme following the AHK (German Chamber of Industry and Commerce) framework. Bosch Rexroth will also collaborate with companies to testbed Industry 4.0 projects at the Centre and develop companies’ expertise.
Companies can leverage support from synergistic advanced manufacturing partners in JID to exchange knowledge and tap on resource sharing platforms to expedite their technology adoption and enhance capability development.
This include:
- Digital Capability Center, where McKinsey & Company supports companies in their digital transformation journey through showcasing digitisation, experiential learning, and offering safe test beds.
- Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre, where Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) has collaborations with over 70 industry players, public sectors, research institutes and academia to implement and test advanced manufacturing solutions. It also creates prototypes and translate ideas into real-life applications.
- Sodick Technology Centre, which offers weekly technical advisory sessions on 3D printing and IoT for JID community. Companies interested in additive manufacturing can collaborate with Sodick in developing, testing and adopting new ideas and concepts.
Latest Developments in Jurong Innovation District
The extension of JTC CleanTech Two and JTC CleanTech Three will add 58,000 square metres of laboratory, office and collaborative spaces to the district. The extension of JTC CleanTech Two was completed in June 2021. It will house A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).
Opening progressively from September 2021, JTC CleanTech Three will comprise 8 laboratory blocks and 1 office block. It will cater to industries in advanced manufacturing, clean technologies, and urban solutions, while housing technology leaders such as Bosch Rexroth, Makino, and A*STAR’s National Metrology Centre.
In addition, the Home Team Science & Technology Agency (HTX) will be setting up a lab in JTC CleanTech Three in 2023 to develop and trial cutting-edge capabilities in homeland security science and technology. This will create more opportunities for collaboration with other great minds.
The development is also home to the newly launched JTC’s Industry Connect Office in November 2021, a one-stop centre to provide further support for companies to start, scale and sustain their transformation. Over the next three years, 1,000 companies will learn about Industry 4.0 through sharing sessions and seminars. Of which, 300 companies will undergo diagnostic, consultancy, and training services to adopt new technology and upskill their workforce.
Ready Pool of Skilled Talent
With ready access to more than 32,000 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent from Nanyang Technological University and a growing pool of startups, the manufacturing community can plug in and accelerate their commercialisation of new technologies.
Sustainability and Green Features
As a car-lite District, an 11-kilometre sky corridor dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists and autonomous shuttles connects the entire district and provides seamless links to transport and activity nodes.
The District will also be home to Singapore’s first dedicated underground District Logistics Network, which will be developed to increase the efficiency of goods movement while freeing up spaces above ground for business and community use. Set amidst a rich tapestry of lush greenery and biodiversity, JID will feature up to 40% green coverage with Jurong Eco-Garden and the upcoming Bulim Park.
