How Additive Manufacturing Revolutionises Malaysia’s Automotive Industry

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been around for several decades but there is still plenty of room for growth. The use of AM in the automotive industry has shown promising results in terms of cost-effectiveness and time efficiency. Dream Technology System (DTS) explains how. 


“Additive Manufacturing (AM) is disrupting the traditional manufacturing industry, including the automotive sector. With the increasing need for product customisation, environmental regulations, and supply chain instability, AM is an emerging game-changer in the automotive industry. The rise of generative design and AM is transforming the way automotive components are designed and produced. We are witnessing a shift from mass production to on-demand manufacturing, and this has enabled manufacturers to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and gain a competitive edge.

“AM is opening innovative design possibilities, enabling manufacturers to create complex geometries previously impossible to manufacture using traditional methods. This is just the beginning, and I believe we will see more disruptive changes in the automotive industry with the continued adoption of Additive Manufacturing technology,” DTS Technology Director Chan Wei Eik, noted.

Chan identifies an example on “a leading car manufacturer recently faced the challenge of improving production efficiency while maintaining high-quality components, and the answer lays in Additive Manufacturing. By adopting this revolutionary technology, the company not only streamlined its manufacturing process, but also gained a significant advantage over its competitors.

The company was grappling with a time-consuming and expensive traditional manufacturing process for its car components, leading to long lead times, a high material wastage, and difficulty in creating complex geometries. This left them struggling to keep up with the dynamic demands of their customers and at risk of falling behind competitors.”
