Ford Charges Electric Push In Beijing’s Transforming Market

China: Carmaker Ford Motor has announced its commitment to launch more than 50 vehicle models in China over the next eight years, including 15 powered by electricity. The statement comes as the company restructures its business and responds to a government push for cleaner air by making all new vehicles electric.

The carmaker sold nearly 106,000 vehicles in October in the world’s largest automotive market, compared 2.7 total million vehicle sales according to the China Association Of Automobile Manufacturers.

It was also announced that that a new Zotye-Ford joint venture will sell new line of affordable vehicles that run on batteries, in addition to the Ford and Lincoln brand electric vehicles.

The company is gearing up to be more competitive globally under new chief executive officer Jim Hackett. The company said that it plans to cut US$14 billion in costs, drop some car models and focus resources on trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles in October 2017. Five additional vehicles will also be assembled in the country for customers, including a Lincoln sports utility vehicle (SUV) and Ford’s first global all-electric SUV.

General Motors and Volkswagen are contending to be the largest automaker in China. General Motors sold 383,000 vehicles in October 2017.
